Inflammation

WHAT IS IT?

infiammazione_1It is a process that occurs in the body every time a negative action damages its natural defence barriers.
If, for example, you trip and, while falling, your knee hits a rock, the most external coating, the skin, will tear. This causes a reaction in the body that wants to repair the damage as soon as possible in order to prevent the injury from becoming a possible “port of entry” for pathogen agents.
It is a positive defence mechanism that the body applies and is characterized by four classic symptoms: heat, redness, swelling and pain.

ACUTE AND CHRONIC INFLAMMATION

This important distinction considers the duration of the inflammatory process and affects its outcome. As the cause of a potentially damaging process should end in a few minutes, inflammation should not last more than a few days with a time variability that depends only on the extent of the trauma and the consequent damage. However, inside our body, there are factors that can make the harmful event on the basis of inflammation lasts longer and, as a consequence, the process itself can continue indefinitely with periods of interval and new acute phases.
In arthrosis, for example, the irregularity of the joint surfaces, often due to wrong movements or bad posture, causes a constant inflammation that could be defined as “basic” inflammation. When the injured joint undergoes a further effort, or a particular stress, the inflammation enters a new acute phase and pain becomes unbearable.

Pain is one of the four symptoms of inflammation that is always present. It is due to the release, in the area of the inflammation, of “algetic” substances that cause pain, which is a consequence of the inflammation.

WHAT TO DO

infiammazione_2In acute inflammation, if the trauma is not excessive, it is sufficient to keep the area immobilized for a few days, apply an anti-inflammatory product, if necessary, and prevent germs from entering. Obviously, the rest period will be proportional to the trauma and a rehabilitation period may be necessary later.
The chronic form is different; it is impossible to intervene by removing the pathogen agent (that causes the inflammation); therefore, it is necessary to follow suitable therapies that restore the correct function of the joint and, at the same time, apply anti-inflammatory and pain-killing methods such as physiotherapy, physic therapies and, during the acute phases, pharmaceutical drugs.

THERMAL TREATMENTS

infiammazione_3Mud and bath therapies are not suitable during the acute phases, but in the chronic forms, obviously not during the new acute phase, treatments at the Abano and Montegrotto spa are particularly efficient due to their anti-inflammatory action, which continues for fifteen days after the treatment is completed. This reduces the frequency of drug therapy and improves the benefits of physiokinesitherapeutic treatments. But it is essential to choose the right spa where they use mud with well-known characteristics and with a sure anti-inflammatory action, like mud from the spa of Abano and Montegrotto.
